Benarkah Bulan dan Matahari Penyebap Tenggelamnya Kapal Titanic

Pada 14 April mendatang, peristiwa tenggelamnya kapal Titanic genap berusia seabad.

Meski sudah 100 tahun berlalu, penelitian tentang penyebab karamnya kapal yang menwaskan lebih dari 1.500 orang itu terus dilakukan.

Hasil penelitian terbaru, tenggelamnya Titanic disebabkan persengkokolan antara bulan dan matahari. Itu menurut para peneliti dari Texas State University, Amerika Serikat, seperti dikutip dari CNN, Rabu (7/3/2012).

Donald Olson dan Russell Doescher, peneliti dari Fakultas Fisika di universitas yang berlokasi di San Marcos, bekerja sama dengan Roger Sinnott, editor senior di Majalah Sky & Telescope.

Mereka berteori, gunung yang ditabrak Titanic berasal dari Greenland, dan terjebak di Pantai Labrador Newfoundland pada awal Januari 1912.

Gunung es yang terjebak di sana, biasanya karena meleleh, sebelum mendapatkan kembali daya apung yang cukup untuk berlayar jauh dari pantai.

Pada tanggal 4 Januari 1912, bulan berada pada jarak terdekatnya dengan Bumi, dalam kurun waktu 1.400 tahun.

Sehari sebelumnya, bumi berada di perihelion, alias jarak terdekat dengan matahari sepanjang tahun. Jajaran dari bumi, matahari, dan bulan, menciptakan 'spring tide' alias kekuatan alam yang sangat kuat untuk memindahkan gunung es beribu kilometer jauhnya.

"Seperti gunung es bepergian ke selatan, mereka sering hanyut ke perairan dangkal. Itu bisa menjelaskan gunung es melimpah pada musim semi 1912," jelas Olson.

Banyaknya gunung es saat itu, juga membuat Kapten Titanic, Edward Smith yang punya jam berlayar tinggi, tidak mampu memprediksinya.

"Dia sudah berlayar ke Atlantik Utara selama 26 tahun, tapi tetap tidak bisa mengurangi kecepatan Titanic, meski sudah menerima peringatan," imbuh Olson.

"Titanic pergi dengan kecepatan penuh ke daerah bergunung es. Itulah yang menenggelamkan kapal tersebut. Koneksi bulan dan matahari dapat menjelaskan, bagaimana gunung es dalam jumlah banyak bisa masuk ke jalur pelayaran Titanic," tandas Olson.

Ponsel bikin orang sindrom nomophobia, sindrom nomophobia sebetulnya apa sih ? Jika anda merasa cemas ketika tidak berada di dekat ponsel, atau tak pernah lepas dari gadget tersebut hingga terkadang membawanya ke tempat tidur, ini berarti ada gejala tengah mengalami nomophobia.
