Mysterious Objects Punching Holes In Weird Saturn Ring
Mysterious objects appear to be doing some damage to Saturn's "weirdest ring," scientists say.
The discovery comes from detailed photos taken of the Saturn system by NASA's Cassini orbiter. In these images, researchers spotted strange objects about a half-mile (kilometer) wide tearing through Saturn's F ring, the thin outermost discrete ring around the planet.
As they pass through the ring, these interlopers drag glittering ice particles out with them, creating visible trails of debris scientists are calling "mini jets."
"I think the F ring is Saturn's weirdest ring, and these latest Cassini results go to show how the F ring is even more dynamic than we ever thought," Carl Murray, a Cassini imaging team member based at London's Queen Mary University, said in a statement. "These findings show us that the F ring region is like a bustling zoo of objects from a half mile in size to moons like Prometheus a hundred miles in size, creating a spectacular show."
The F ring is held in check by two tiny moons, Prometheus and Pandora, which weave inside and outside the outer ring. Sometimes these moons perturb the ring, creating channels and snowballs. Now scientists think that some of these snowballs survive to become the weird objects punching new holes in the ring. [Video: Saturn's F Ring Bashed by Weird Objects]
The objects appear to collide with the ring at mild speeds of about 4 mph (6.4 kph), but can leave relatively long trails extending between 20 to 110 miles long (40 to 180 kilometers).
"The F ring has a circumference of 550,000 miles [881,000 km], and these mini-jets are so tiny they took quite a bit of time and serendipity to find," said Nick Attree, a Cassini imaging associate at Queen Mary. "We combed through 20,000 images and were delighted to find 500 examples of these rogues during just the seven years Cassini has been at Saturn."
The F ring, which stands alone beyond the thick clump of Saturn's main rings, has long puzzled scientists. It was first discovered in the early 1980s by the Voyager probe.
"Voyager found a bright ring, shepherded into a tight orbital corridor by two of Saturn's moons, Prometheus and Pandora, the so-called 'shepherd moons,'" Carolyn Porco, Cassini Imaging team leader, wrote in an email to reporters. "But it was the complexity of this ring that baffled: isolated bright clumps, individual strands, braided regions, kinky segments all seemed at the time to be inexplicable ... Tens of thousands of Cassini images later, we have come finally to understand the intricate workings of this most beguiling ring."
Cassini launched in 1997 as part of the Cassini-Huygens mission, a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The orbiter has been circling the ringed planet since 2004, and is currently on an extended mission until at least 2017.
The researchers are presenting their findings today (April 24) at the European Geosciences Union meeting in Vienna, Austria.
APNewsBreak: Fireball remnants likely in Calif.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Tiny meteorites found in the Sierra foothills of northern California were part of a giant fireball that exploded over the weekend with about one-third the explosive force of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in World War II, scientists said Wednesday.
The rocks each weighed about 10 grams, or the weight of two nickels, said John T. Wasson, a longtime professor and expert in meteorites at UCLA's Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics.
Experts say the flaming meteor, dating to the early formation of the solar system 4 to 5 billion years ago, was probably about the size of a minivan when it entered the Earth's atmosphere with a loud boom early Sunday. It was seen from Sacramento, Calif., to Las Vegas and parts of northern Nevada.
An event of that size might happen once a year around the world, said Don Yeomans of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. But most of them occur over the ocean or an uninhabited area, he said.
"Getting to see one is something special," he said. He added, "Most meteors you see in the night's sky are the size of tiny stones or even grains of sand, and their trail lasts all of a second or two."
The meteor probably weighed about 154,300 pounds, said Bill Cooke, a specialist in meteors at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. At the time of disintegration, he said, it probably released energy equivalent to a 5-kiloton explosion. The Hiroshima bomb was 15 kilotons.
"You don't often have kiloton rocks flying over your head," he said.
The boom, another expert said, was caused by the speed with which the space rock entered the atmosphere. Meteorites enter Earth's upper atmosphere at somewhere between 22,000 and 44,000 mph — faster than the speed of sound, thus creating a sonic boom.
The friction between the rock and the air is so intense that "it doesn't even burn it up, it vaporizes," said Tim Spahr, director of the Minor Planet Center at Harvard University.
Wasson said one meteorite was found near the town of Coloma, about 35 miles northeast of Sacramento. "I'm sure more will be found, I'm hoping, including some fairly big pieces," he said.
"The fact that two pieces already have been found means one knows where to look," Wasson said.
Bits of the meteor could be strewn over an area as long as 10 miles, most likely stretching west from Coloma, where James W. Marshall first discovered gold in California, at Sutter's Mill in 1848.
Robert Ward of Prescott, Ariz., who has been hunting and collecting meteorites around the world for more than 20 years, said he found the first piece about 10 a.m. Tuesday in between a baseball field and park on the edge of the town of Lotus.
Ward said he "instantly knew" it was a rare meteorite known as "CM" — carbonaceous chondrite — based in part on the "fusion crusts from atmospheric entry" on one side of the rock. He actually has two rocks that he suspects were part of the same small meteorite that split on impact.
"It was just, needless to say, a thrilling moment," he said.
"It is one of the oldest things known to man and one of the rarest types of meteorites there is," he said. "It contains amino acids and organic compounds that are extremely important to science."
Yeomens confirmed this type of meteorite is one of the more primitive types of space rocks out there, dating to the origin of the solar system 4 to 5 billion years ago. And it's "actually kind of unusual," he said.
Yeomens said it's got two of the most important chemicals that scientists look for: carbon and a form of water. In fact, this type of space rock is likely full of water and would have made a good candidate for the new space company announced Tuesday that plans to mine asteroids, he said.
"And this one landed in their backyard for a lot less than they planned to spend," he said.
The minivan sized asteroid wasn't on NASA's lengthy list of near Earth objects that they track coming close to the planet, so it took scientists by surprise. "There are millions of objects of that size that we don't know about," he said. "They're too small to image unless they're right up on top of you."
Ward and others tracked the meteorites' possible location based on estimates by, among others, scientists with the Meteor Group at the Western University of Ontario in Canada that the fireball likely had exploded in the upper atmosphere above California's Central Valley.
Wasson suspected hundreds of dealers and collectors already have joined the search. He said it was important to recover the meteorites soon because any rain will cause them to degrade, losing their sodium and potassium.
Nokia, HTC win European patent ruling
HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finland's Nokia and Taiwan's HTC won a key European ruling that a patent of German firm IPCom, which was threatening sales of their phones in Germany, was invalid in its current form.
Wednesday's ruling by the European Patent Office was a rare spot of good news for Nokia, which is struggling with dwindling sales and credit rating downgrades in recent weeks. Nokia said it meant it could continue selling products in Germany.
IPCom said it would immediately appeal against the ruling and that its patent 100A, which standardizes a cellphone's first connection to a network, was valid until there is a final decision on the appeal.
"Today's judgment does not impact the successful rulings regarding infringement proceeding against Nokia and HTC in Germany and UK," it said.
IPCom acquired Bosch's mobile telephony patent portfolio, which was created between the mid-1980s and 2000 and includes about 160 patent families worldwide.
Those patents, including 100A, include some key technologies for the wireless industry.
Several top phone makers have signed a licensing deal with IPCom, but HTC and Nokia have challenged IPCom's patents in courts across Europe.
Nokia and IPCom have been fighting in several courts for around five years over the patents and Nokia has said IPCom's licensing fee demands are excessive and unjustifiable.
"IPCom needs to recognize its position and end its unrealistic demands," Paul Melin, vice president, Intellectual Property at Nokia, said in a statement.
HTC - whose German retailers IPCom has sued for patent infringement - said it was pleased with the ruling and said it hoped it would end the long patent fight.
"This ruling undermines IPCom's license infringement claim against us. We trust IPCom will now reconsider its opportunistic dispute with HTC and withdraw its legal action against us," the Taiwanese company said.

Sprint loss widens on Nextel, iPhone lifts sales
NEW YORK (AP) — The iPhone boosted struggling Sprint Nextel Corp. in the latest quarter, letting it beat AT&T and perhaps even Verizon in recruiting high-paying phone subscribers to the Sprint network.
Sprint started selling the iPhone in October, after AT&T and Verizon. To get it, it had to promise Apple that it would buy phones for $15.5 billion over four years — a big sum for a company in a precarious financial position — and analysts have noted that the phone could push Sprint over the edge, into bankruptcy.
But in the first quarter, the iPhone appeared to help Sprint recruit subscribers and get more money out of each one.
Sprint added a net 263,000 subscribers to the Sprint network on contract-based plans, which are the most lucrative. That was up just a smidgen from last year's figure in the same quarter, but it comes as AT&T and Verizon Wireless have seen big drops in new customers.
Excluding tablets, which earn lower fees, Verizon Wireless added a net of about 240,000 customers in the quarter, while AT&T added 7,000.
The Sprint figure includes some tablets, but the number is likely small, because unlike Verizon and AT&T, Sprint does not sell the iPad.
Sprint's data network is much slower than Verizon's or AT&T's, but it has been luring smartphone subscribers by offering unlimited data usage. AT&T and Verizon Wireless have stopped signing up new customers for unlimited data plans, and AT&T has started slowing down data usage severely once customers on its "unlimited data" plan hit certain usage limits.
On a call with analysts Wednesday, Hesse defended the iPhone, saying customer desire for the device and lower customer support costs justify the price.
"The evidence so far supports our decision to carry the phone," Hesse said.
Sprint activated 1.5 million iPhones in the quarter, down from 1.8 million in the fourth quarter.
Helped by a $10 per month surcharge on smartphones imposed last year, Sprint's wireless service revenue rose 7.4 percent from a year ago, compared to 7.7 percent at Verizon, which has had more time to sell the iPhone. At AT&T, the figure was 4.3 percent.
"Sprint posted easily the most impressive (quarter) in U.S. telecom," said Kevin Smithen, an analyst at Macquarie Securities.
Sprint shares fell 4 cents, or 1.6 percent, to close at $2.43 Wednesday. The shares are still close to a three-year low of $2.10 hit in January.
However, Sprint's contract subscriber additions turn into a net loss of 192,000 when the outdated Nextel network is included. Since buying Nextel in 2005, Sprint has struggled with the cost of running two disparate wireless networks, even as Nextel customers have cancelled service in droves. It's scheduled to shut the network down next year.
The depreciation, or drop in value, of the Nextel network widened Sprint's net loss from January through March to $863 million, or 29 cents per share. In the same quarter last year, the Overland Park, Kan., company's loss was $439 million, or 15 cents per share.
Analysts polled by FactSet were on average expecting a loss of 42 cents per share. Sprint beat that with the help of the better service revenues and a one-time benefit from a cancelled network-sharing contract.
Revenue was $8.73 billion, up 5 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $8.71 billion.
Sprint has already started thinning out the Nextel network, turning off cell towers. Steve Elfman, the head of network operations, said this shouldn't affect service, since there are only 5.4 million Nextel subscribers left. That's 10 percent of the overall number of Sprint Nextel customers.
On the radio frequencies freed up by the Nextel phase-out, Sprint is building a new fourth-generation, or 4G, wireless broadband network using the "LTE" technology AT&T and Verizon are using. It's reducing its reliance on Clearwire Corp.'s 4G network for data service for its smartphones. That means Clearwire 4G, which is based on an older network technology, is no longer a selling point for its smartphones. Sprint will now make Clearwire 4G available on phones for its Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile pay-as-you go brands, Hesse said.
Sprint has 15.3 million pay-as-you-go subscribers, making it second only to Tracfone in the U.S. no-contract phone market.
Syria violence rages, France tells U.N. to hurry
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian forces shot dead four civilians on a bus on Wednesday and fighting raged near Damascus, dissidents said, as international pressure mounted onPresident Bashar al-Assad to honor U.N.-backed ceasefire pledges to order his troops back to barracks.
In the city of Hama, an anti-Assad hotbed, an explosion ripped through a building, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens more, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Another activist group, the grassroots Local Coordination Committee, said the blast was caused by a rocket launched into the building and put the death toll much higher at 54, including several children.
A third activist source said the explosion may have come from inside the building. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the varying accounts.
There was no comment from Syria's government, which says it is committed to U.N.-Arab League peace envoy Kofi Annan's April 12 ceasefire accord, but reserves the right to respond to what it says are continued attacks by "terrorist groups".
Hama has been hosting a small team of United Nationsobservers, who are preparing the way for a larger U.N.mission which will arrive to monitor the ceasefire pact.
In defiance of the truce accord, shelling was relentless in Douma, east of the capital, residents said, giving further ammunition to Western states such as France that want broad United Nations sanctions to try to end more than a year of fighting in which 9,000 people have been killed.
As well as urging faster deployment of U.N. monitors, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Paris would push for a so-called "Chapter 7" resolution, which would mean punitive sanctions, next month if Assad's forces did not pull back.
"This cannot continue indefinitely. We want to see observers in sufficient numbers, at least 300 ... deployed as quickly as possible," Juppe said.
"If that does not work, we cannot allow the regime to defy us. We would have to move to a new stage with a Chapter 7 resolution at the United Nations to take a new step to stop this tragedy."
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four people were killed when security forces opened fire on a bus at a checkpoint on the main road from Aleppo to Damascus.
An elderly man was also killed, it added, in heavy fighting in the southern city of Deraa, crucible of the anti-Assad revolt that flared 13 months ago after uprisings against autocratic leaders in North Africa and the Middle East.
A woman who visited Douma on Tuesday night said the town had been under constant shelling and was without water, power or mobile phone signal. Pro-government gunmen were wandering the streets, she added, preventing people from leaving their homes.
"There was bombardment all night. Artillery and tanks. We didn't sleep at all. Not for a moment," the woman told Reuters in neighboring Lebanon. "Most residents have gone down to live on the ground floor because most of the second and third floors have been hit."
U.N. LAMPOONED
There was no mention of the bus shooting or bombardment in Syria's rigidly controlled media or comment from the authorities in Damascus, which has barred most foreign journalists since the revolt started.
Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general, told the Security Council on Tuesday that Syria had failed to withdraw weapons from population centers in violation of the terms of the April 12 truce he engineered.
"Everything we have seen suggests that the Syrians are wanting to play for time and they haven't any real intention to start a political process and a transition. But we need to call their bluff, as it were, and test that," a senior Western diplomat told reporters in New York on condition of anonymity.
The latest violence comes two days after 31 people were killed in Hama immediately after U.N. monitors left the area and may prompt more outside pressure on Assad.
Damascus says 2,600 of its security personnel have been killed by the rebel armed groups that operate in parts of the country of 23 million.
"The situation in Syria continues to be unacceptable," Annan told the 15-nation Security Council. "The Syria authorities must implement their commitments in full and a cessation of violation in all its forms must be respected by all parties."
He stressed the need to get "eyes and ears on the ground", but peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said it would take a month to deploy the first 100 monitors of the UNSMIS mission - a time frame that drew derision from ordinary Syrians.
"It takes them a month to arrive? Are they coming on horses?" asked a resident of Homs, a city which has endured constant army shelling. He declined to give his real name.
The reasons for the slow deployment were not clear, although diplomats said Norwegian General Robert Mood, who led a U.N. negotiating team to Syria this month, had been made its head.
So far, there are only 15 unarmed monitors in Syria out of a planned final team of 300, a frustratingly thin presence for the opposition activists who say they have noted some decline in the daily death toll.
In a display of Syrian black humor, some activists have mocked the monitors, appearing on video in spoof blue uniforms and with blacked-out glasses and tissue paper stuffed into their ears - pretending neither to see nor hear anything untoward.
"After one month we will have maybe 1,000 or 2,000 people killed - it's ridiculous. How can the international community watch without moving quickly?" asked Mousab al-Hamadi, an opposition resident in Hama province, a hotbed of the revolt.
RUSSIAN DOUBTS
Annan said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem had written to him saying that "the withdrawal of massed troops and heavy weapons from in and around population centers is now complete and military operations have ceased".
However, Annan's team cited satellite imagery as evidence that tanks are lurking out of sight on the outskirts of cities. Even Syria's ally Russia voiced concern.
Russia's U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, said it would be worrying if Damascus had failed to withdraw troops and weapons.
"If this is the case, if the promise in the letter has not really been carried out, that would mean it is a breach of the promise they made on Saturday," Churkin said. "I'm certainly going to bring it to the attention of Moscow."
Throughout the conflict, Russia has been one of Assad's few friends, providing protection at the United Nations from any Security Council measures.
For all the rhetoric, France and other Western powers have few tools to dislodge Assad, who succeeded his long-ruling father Hafez al-Assad in 2000 and who has brushed aside all calls to hand over power.
They are particularly wary of military intervention similar to NATO's Libya air campaign that helped topple Muammar Gaddafi for fear it could draw in powerful Assad allies such as Iran and Hezbollah militants and further destabilize the Middle East.
