Swiss scientists demonstrate mind-controlled robot
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Swiss scientists have demonstrated how a partially paralyzed person can control a robot by thought alone, a step they hope will one day allow immobile people to interact with their surroundings through so-called avatars.Similar experiments have taken place in the United States and Germany, but they involved either able-bodied patients or invasive brain implants.
On Tuesday, a team at Switzerland's Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne used only a simple head cap to record the brain signals of Mark-Andre Duc, who was at a hospital in the southern Swiss town of Sion 100 kilometers (62 miles) away.
Duc's thoughts — or rather, the electrical signals emitted by his brain when he imagined lifting his paralyzed fingers — were decoded almost instantly by a laptop at the hospital. The resulting instructions — left or right — were then transmitted to a foot (30 centimeter)-tall robot scooting around the Lausanne lab.
Duc lost control of his legs and fingers in a fall and is now considered partially quadriplegic. He said controlling the robot wasn't hard on a good day.
"But when I'm in pain it becomes more difficult," he told The Associated Press through a video link screen on a second laptop attached to the robot.
Background noise caused by pain or even a wandering mind has emerged as a major challenge in the research of so-called brain-computer interfaces since they first began to be tested on humans more than a decade ago, said Jose Millan, who led the Swiss team.
While the human brain is perfectly capable of performing several tasks at once, a paralyzed person would have to focus the entire time they are directing the device.
"Sooner or later your attention will drop and this will degrade the signal," Millan said.
To get around this problem, his team decided to program the computer that decodes the signal so that it works in a similar way to the brain's subconscious. Once a command such as 'walk forward' has been sent, the computer will execute it until it receives a command to stop or the robot encounters an obstacle.
The robot itself is an advance on a previous project that let patients control an electric wheelchair. By using a robot complete with a camera and screen, users can extend their virtual presence to places that are arduous to reach with a wheelchair, such as an art gallery or a wedding abroad.
Rajesh Rao, an associate professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, who has tested similar systems with able-bodied subjects, said the Lausanne team's research appeared to mark an advance in the field.
"Especially if the system can be used by the paraplegic person outside the laboratory," he said in an email.
Millan said that although the device has already been tested at patients' homes, it isn't as easy to use as some commercially available gadgets that employ brain signals to control simple toys, such Mattel's popular MindFlex headset.
"But this will come in a matter of years," Millan said.
Apple trumps expectations, sells 35M iPhones in 2Q
NEW YORK (AP) — Apple Inc., the world's most valuable company, trumped skeptics once again by reporting blowout iPhone sales.
Apple says it sold 35 million iPhones in the January-to-March quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations.
Apple's stock was down 2 percent at the close of regular trading, as investors believed phone companies had reined in iPhone sales. In extended trading, the stock rallied $40.02, or 7.1 percent, to $600.30.
"They're delivering the goods much stronger than even the biggest bulls would have thought," said Brian White, an analyst with Topeka Capital Markets. "It's Apple fever at its finest."
Net income in the company's fiscal second quarter was $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per share. That was nearly double the net income of $6 billion, or $6.40 per share, a year ago.
Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $10.07 per share for the latest quarter, Apple's fiscal second.
Revenue was $39.2 billion, up 59 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $37 billion.
IPad sales came in below analyst expectations, at 11.8 million units. But that was still two and a half times as many as it sold in the same quarter a year ago. Apple launched a new iPad model in the quarter, and supplies are still tight. White believes short supplies of the new high-resolution screen are to blame.
Mac sales were also slightly below expectations, at 4 million. That was up 7 percent from last year. Meanwhile, the overall PC market grew about 2 percent.
Windows PC makers are now hoping Windows 8 will give them a better chance at competing with Apple, both in PCs and tablets. Intel CEO Paul Otellini last week said he believes PCs and tablets will merge into one light device with a keyboard and a touch-sensitive screen.
Apple CEO Tim Cook dismissed that idea on a conference call with analysts Tuesday. Tablets and PCs work best as separate devices, playing to their own strengths, he said.
"You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going to be pleasing to the user," he said.
Cook also dismissed concerns that phone companies aren't satisfied subsidizing each new iPhone by hundreds of dollars, and are trying to curb iPhone upgrades by their subscribers. AT&T Inc.'s Tuesday morning earnings report provided signs that the company is doing just that.
"IPhone is the best smartphone on the planet to entice the customer who is currently using a traditional mobile phone to upgrade to a smartphone." Cook said. "There's a win-win-win there."
Analyst Abhey Lamba at Mizuho Securities agreed, saying he doesn't expect phone companies to change their subsidies any time soon.
"IPhone is selling well because consumers want it, not because carriers are pushing it," he said.
IPhone sales accounted for 58 percent of Apple's revenue, more than ever. Three years ago, the figure was 27 percent.
Keeping with the trend over the last year, Asia, and in particular China, accounted for much of the revenue growth. Sales in "Greater China," which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, were triple those of a year ago, and accounted for 20 percent of Apple's revenue.
For the third fiscal quarter, ending in June, Apple is expecting earnings of $8.68 per share and revenue of $34 billion. Both figures are well below analyst expectations, but that's usually the case with Apple's forecasts. The company is famous for low-balling its forecasts.
During the quarter, Apple announced that it would start paying a dividend this summer. It has ample cash to pay for one: the company's hoard grew to $110 billion during the quarter. However, the company doesn't look at the whole pile when it decides how much it can pay out in dividends. Instead, it only looks at the $63 billion it has in U.S. accounts. Like other U.S. multinationals, it doesn't want to bring back overseas earnings and have them taxed again at the U.S. corporate tax rate of 35 percent.
Apple's market capitalization is $559 billion, including the rally in extended trading. The world's second most valuable company, Exxon Mobil Corp., is worth $407 billion.
Norway bomb blast diverted police, court hears
OSLO (Reuters) - When a large car bomb exploded at Oslo's central government building last summer, killing eight and injuring more than 200, police first thought they were dealing with two bombers who were about to mount new attacks in the capital.But while confusion reigned, Anders Behring Breivik was already driving by himself toward a Labour Party summer camp 40 km (25 miles) away, where he would massacre 69 people.
"There was a possibility that more bombs had been positioned and also that more offenders could be active," police superintendent Thor Langli said on Tuesday, the seventh day of anti-Islam fanatic Breivik's trial.
"For a period, we actually believed we were dealing with two perpetrators."
Until Tuesday, Breivik had been the trial's main witness, detailing coldly how and why he went about the July 22 attacks that killed 77 people in all.
He denied criminal guilt, saying his targets were "traitors" whose supposed embrace of multiculturalism and immigration was opening Europe to a slow-motion Muslim takeover.
CONFUSION
Breivik followed intently as Langli described the Oslo blast site and the police response.
The main reason he suspected two attackers, Langli said, was that he heard conflicting descriptions of a man seen leaving the car that blew up.
He said a security officer who had reviewed a surveillance recording told police that the man was dark-skinned.
"He described him as not Nordic (and) not African, but in between," Langli said.
Separately, he said, a fire official who saw the event from across the street said the man was light-skinned. Breivik is indeed light-skinned and was wearing a fake police uniform with a dark helmet and visor.
The police did not publicize the descriptions while the confusion reigned, but many commentators initially assumed the attack had been the work of al Qaeda or another Islamist group.
Police forensics experts said on Tuesday that most of those killed were blown to pieces. The nearest was a 32-year Ministry of Justice lawyer named Jon Vegard Lervaag.
"One cannot conceive that Lervaag ever knew there had been an explosion," forensic technician Arne Stray-Pedersen said.
Ahead of the trial, which is expected to last 10 weeks, one court-appointed team of psychiatrists concluded that Breivik was psychotic while a second found him mentally capable.
Secret Service moves to oust three more in prostitution scandal
The Secret Service announced Tuesday that two more agents connected to the embarrassing Cartagena, Colombia prostitution scandal had chosen to resign and that the agency was moving to fire a third.The news came shortly after President Barack Obama, taping an appearance on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," blamed the uproar on "a couple of knuckleheads" in an otherwise "incredible" agency.
Assistant Director Paul Morrissey from the Secret Service Office of Government and Public Affairs announced the latest personnel news in a written statement that also specified that two other agents had been cleared of serious wrongdoing and would face "administrative action." A U.S. government official familiar with the situation told Yahoo News that could mean anything from a verbal rebuke by a supervisor to a few days of leave.
"The Secret Service's investigation into allegations of misconduct by its employees in Cartagena, Colombia, continues," Morrissey said in the statement.Two more employees have chosen to resign in connection to the scandal, in which agents preparing for Obama's visit to an international summit in Cartagena allegedly brought prostitutes back to their hotel.
The agency is moving to permanently revoke the security clearance of one other individual, a process that allows that person to appeal. If the appeal fails, the employee "must separate" from the agency, Morrissey said.
If that happens, the number of agents who will have resigned, retired or been removed over the controversy will reach nine. Three have been cleared of serious wrongdoing, meaning the agency has addressed the status of all 12 employees under investigation.
"The Secret Service is committed to conducting a full, thorough and fair investigation in this matter, and will not hesitate to take appropriate action should any additional information come to light," Morrissey said.
